Saturday 19th
January saw the first gala of the New Year. The Grove played host to 22 City of
Belfast swimmers competing in either or all the events
which where the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 400m Individual Medley.
Eight of these swimmers were from the academy squad getting some valuable
experience in a competitive gala for the first time.
The day started off well with many new times being set in the 100m
butterfly and some very credible swims. Next was the 100m freestyle with most of
the academy swimmers taking their first foray into competitive swimming at the
next level with some very fine performance from squad some aged as young as 7
and 8. The last event was the dreaded 400 IM. With some swimmers a little
apprehensive to say the least all who swam acquitted themselves very well and
now realize what it takes to compete over the longer distances.
In all there where 62 individual swims and 62 new times or personnel
bests set which is a 100% strike rate. Absolutely super swimming from all who
where there and those who weren’t missed an opportunity to set some valuable
qualifying times.
Swimmer of the meet
this time competed in all the events. Though there was a little nervousness
before some of the swims. He still managed 2 new times and 1 personnal best.
Showed real commitment to his training this season so far and the performances
are starting to pay the dividends…..swimmer of the meet is
James Irwin!!!!
