The Dave McCullagh Memorial Gala got under way today at the UL Arena at the University of Limerick. This three day event brings together Ireland’s top swimmers to compete for national honours in the first competition of 2010. The competition also provides an opportunity for qualification to the Irish national squad ahead of the major international competitions this summer, the European LC Championships in Budapest this August, The European Juniors in Helsinki and the World Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Alison Todd competed in the 400 Individual Medley and finished third in a new pb of 5.08.69 which qualifies her for the high performance regional development squad. An excellent achievement. Seana Harley Moyes competed in the 800m freestyle and finished in a new pb of 10.11.64. It is really rewarding for all the coaches to see the training programme result in pb's at such a big event. Alison Todd added another bronze in the 100m breaststroke and finished 4th and 5th in the 100m fly and 200m IM respectively. Emily Heyburn made three finals and finished 4th in the 200m fly, 5th in the 100m fly and 6th in the 50m fly. Seana Harley Moyes pbed in the 100m free as well as the 800m free on the first night. Well done to these three swimmers and we hope this encourages our junior swimmers to carry on training as hard as they are. |
