David Stronge Shows the Way
4/9/2009
City of Belfast Junior Coach David Stronge was back in winning form when representing Northern Ireland at the recent World Police Fire Games held in Vancouver, Canada.10, 500 athletes from 80 countries competed in 55 different sports. The University of British Columbia was the venue for the swimming events and despite strong competition from elite swimmers in the Fire, Police and Correctional service worldwide David put Northern Ireland firmly on the map as a top contender at the games with outstanding success across a number of events.

David took the competition by storm claiming an early gold medal in the 100M Breaststroke with a personal best time of 1.10.45 seconds. He went into the finals as fourth seed, but inspired by the high level of Northern Ireland support, including his sporting idol Dame Mary Peters, he went on to dominate the event and clinch the gold medal from the Indian swimmer. The next event to give David a place on the podium was 50M Breaststroke where again amongst outstanding international competition David clinched second place and a silver medal. David also established himself as a contender in the Open Water Swim held at Locarno beach over 3.2km by taking the Bronze medal, which was an excellent achievement as this was his first attempt at a competitive sea swim.

As City of Belfast Coach David Stronge and his swimmers have been no strangers to success over the last few months. He was not only named as Lucozade Junior Coach of the Year, but the City of Belfast Junior Squad also brought home a host of medals and a new Irish Age Group record from the recent Division 2 National Championships in Limerick and was again in the medals at the Division 1 held in Dublin.
